Came up with this recipe tonight, trying to find more ways to use quinoa. The quinoa has a certain fragrance but the flavour is not particularly noticeable in this.
QUINOA FRIED RICE
1/2 cup whole quinoa 1 cup jasmine rice or your favourite type 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 3 tbsp olive oil (+/-) 1/2 cup soya sauce 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp minced fresh ginger or 1/2 tsp ground dried 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional) 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp chili flakes (optional) 1 medium onion approx. 3 cups fresh vegetables cut into bite sized pieces: carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, or whatever your family likes best
Cook rice and quinoa according to package directions. My rice and quinoa both cook for 18 minutes so I did them together; otherwise cook separately and stir together. When cooked, keep covered and set aside.
Cube raw chicken into about 1" pieces and set aside. In a wok on medium-high heat, heat olive oil and add garlic and ginger. Stir a minute or two, then add half the soya sauce. Add chicken and and onion and stir until chicken is just cooked through. Stir in vegetables, sesame seeds, brown sugar, turmeric, and chili flakes, cover and steam for about 5 minutes until vegetables are tender. Stir in quinoa and rice, and add more soya sauce to taste. Aim for a light yellow-brown colour. When everything is heated through, serve.

Whew, I'm glad it went over ok! I've made that recipe with just rice for years, just made it up and use whatever I feel like. It's never quite the same twice, so I was worried it might be gross to others.
Yes quinoa has curlies, it's the germ. You didn't cook it too long.

What interesting timing, I just bought quinoa for the first time Saturday at Costco. I made it ith chicken broth and mixed veggies, I idn't notice a frangrance to it, maybe because I cooked it with broth? I will have to try your recipe Jilly

Michele, the first time I bought quinoa was when DD was starting solids and I bought the flakes. It tasted like absolutely nothing, seriously like damp cardboard. So I was surprised when I bought this bag of organic whole quinoa and when I cooked it, I could smell it all over the house. It had a sort of nutty/grain smell and a slight fragrance like aromatic rice.
It's also good added (precooked) to a healthy soup.
Squish, I LOVE barley!

The package of quinoa I have says it has the highest percentage of protein of any grain and that it's grown 12000 above sea level i the Andes.

I got everything ready the night before and threw it together, so my rice and quinoa were cold too.
I'm not a fan of egg in my rice, personally. I don't think it's gross, I just don't love it.
