My oldest (now 15) son is taking "Hospitality" (cooking) in Grade 10, and his new specialty is homemade breadsticks. He's even starting to experiment with flavouring them (rolling them in parmesan, etc.)
He was interested in cooking from a young age - he was 6 years old when he asked us to teach him how to make sandwiches for his school lunch because he wanted to do it and not have us make them. That mostly started because I would occasionally "forget" that he didn't like mustard in his sandwiches.. He progressed from there to being allowed to cook simple things on the stove with supervision, and now to using the stove on his own and even baking on this own.
He also frequently helps me when I'm making pickles or jams (and since I have about 30 lbs of apples in my kitchen right now, I'm sure hoping he'll help peel & core them so I can can apple piE filling this weekend!!)
