This is the same poll we ran in July 2000. The results back then were:
* 34% voted for Yes, I don't think it is fair for kids who like peanut products * 52% voted for No, I think it is better safe than sorry * 14% voted for No, my child has a peanut allergy * 0% voted for No comment
We're wondering how opinions have changed over the years?

I think it has gone too far. A school of 500 kids can't bring peanut products because 1 kid has a allergy?? What about kids who are allergic to dairy....yeast.....etc??? They don't ban peanut products at restaurants, resorts...etc... I had problems finding things for my ds to eat for lunch because the only stuff he liked as a young child was peanut butter/nutella. I am sure there must be a better sollution?

In ds's school of 300, there are 10 anaphylactic allergies. How would I feel, knowing that my son's lunch killed a classmate? Would I want him to carry around the guilt as well? I think not. There are plenty of foods to eat from and he gets his fill of peanut butter at home. I thought schools these days were about inclusion rather than exclusion.

Yes I think schools have gone much too far. It is unfair to 99% of the school population. Nuts are healthy. Nuts are good for us. Nuts are way better than all the packaged junk out there, yet children are not allowed to bring them in their lunches. I don't see what the problem is with having nut free lunch rooms for children who need them. Of course there are all the other allergies which don't get the spotlight like nuts do - eggs, gluten, etc. What about those kids?
I'm a scientist, and I have read a fair amount of research on the growing evidence that guidelines promoting peanut avoidance in young diets may be counterproductive and resulting in an increase in peanut allergies. Banning peanuts is not the solution.

You can't give an epi-pen on a daily basis. It's not like Claritin. It's meant to save a life in the event of an emergency.

ITA QM. I feel the same way. I have a nephew who has a peanut allergy and my dd's best friend has one. My SIL is NOT a peanut nazi she wants her son to be aware of his allergy and to be proactive about it he's been taught this way since he was 4 and started school. They do not remove peanut products from their house, why should his school? My dd's best friend is not shy to tell anyone she has an allergy and she advocates on her own behalf in restaurants and in social gatherings, parties etc... We bring her with us out to dinner out for dessert and she sleeps over here once a week. We also do not remove peanut products from our house, nor do her parents. If my ds eats peanut butter when she is here we tell her that he is eating peanut butter and she stays out of the kitchen for 10 minutes.

I have no problem with most of the rules, I see no reason why a parent can't buy nutella or almond butter instead of peanut butter. I have problems with all nuts banned from the school. DD has not been allowed to eat peanut free granola bars because there may be a peanut in it and the teacher does not know.

I have a ds on a high fat high protein diet so it is challenging to pack lunches he will eat without peanut butter. Most of his lunch is homemade baked goods but I can only do this because I am a SAHM. If I worked full time and needed to find convenient nutfree items at the store that were high fat high protein maybe it would bother me more.
I am going to purchase that nut free "peanut butter" made out of soybeans because the fat content is comparable and apparently the taste is too. I am also looking into a similar product made from sunflower seeds.
I certainly don't want to be the cause of someone elses child getting sick or even dying. That's my main concern even if it is annoying and/or inconvenient.
BTW, my DH thinks it has gone way too far too. But, really, what logically and realistically can be done?

I also agree its gone to far , both my older kids went to school with peqanut butter sandwiches , it was never a problem , It was all I could afford to send them with and be healthy . My dd best friend was allergic to peanuts , she knew so she knew not to eat them . I think sociaty puts more fear then needed into everything these days , soon we are all gonna be in bubbles to go anywhere . I also believe because we are more protective it makes it worse , they say let the dog lick the babys face it will help them develope immunity to allergies its true, just as let them eat some dirt , this how we as humen build up why do animals not have all this beacause they touch and eat whatever .. We used to need our Pancreas because we ate raw meat then we learned to cook it so now it gives us problems an ruptures on us .
We humans are making things worse , and honeslty its alot of media hype as well , it makes money .
My brother was allergic to peanuts as well we ate peanut butter beside him .
I understand a parent with a child that is allergic being scared I would be also . But just as other children with different dieases they are taught and the teacher are adware of them .

I agree that it has gone over board. Why are the ones with nut allergies the only ones that should be protected? What about egg allergies. When I worked at a daycare we had a little boy that had a severe egg allergy, the daycare inspector was there for the day and opened up her EGG sandwich and this child started to swell up he was that allergic to eggs. I think it should just be contained to the classroom that the child is in and the teachers in the other classes should make sure the kids are washing their hands when done with lunch.

Oddly enough, I had stronger feeling about this issue before my DS was even in school. Since he has started I am finding it to be much easier than I thought to pack a peanut free lunch.
I have heard that some schools have a total peanut ban, meaning even AT HOME kids are not allowed to eat peanut butter or peanut products. This is, I assume, in cases of severe and sensitive allergies. This is something that I cannot agree with.
