I am trying really hard not to spoil the kids but I'm extremely "sale" savvy and have been piling up presents for a couple months.

I now have more than I thought I would so I'm not sure If I should just save some for later next year or just let them all go under the tree.
I really didn't spend too much - I'm very proud of myself

Do you set limits in terms of # of gifts or $ amount?

I think I might have to set stricter limits on myself next year - REGARDLESS of amazing sale hunting!!!

I limit both $ and #. I find that if they get too much it becomes overwhelming. Santa brings practical gifts like socks, pens, notebooks, hair accessories etc. and one fun gift (lego, puzzle, etc.) We buy one gift for each child (we have four children) that is something they really, really desire...my son is getting a rip stik, daughter a camera etc. They also save up their money and buy each other small gifts (this year I took them to Chapters so they bought books for each other) for under the tree...so the kids receive 4 gifts under the tree and a few things in their stocking.

We are doing one gift + stocking from Santa, and one gift from us. The gift from Santa is about $50 for my older son(two transformers, one satisfying the request for a tank from S) , and we spent the same on his present from us. Santa spent a bit less on our 1 year old because he has so many things already. Santa is bringing the fun toys, and we got our older son clothes and Christmas jammies, and the baby a MEC bunting and christmas Jammies.

My problem is the stockings. I tend to go a bit crazy with them and get wayyy too much stuff. I really tried to just get some dollar store stationary, socks n' undies, and a couple of little toys, but I went a bit bananas.

It's just so easy to go overboard, especially when you can justify it because you didn't pay much for it. I won, found as thrift stores or cashed in points for a *lot* of DD's stuff, but she still has a huge number of presents. This is the first Christmas where DD will have a clue what's going on, and I just.....kinda got carried away.

If you find a good system, let me know.

I go stupid at Christmas with all the sales. I start shopping way to early. But a couple of years ago I started putting away some gifts that I had bought on sale for birthdays, Easter, etc., and with 5 kids that helps alot throughout the year.

I try to stick to the poem...

Something they want,
Something they need,
Something to wear, and
Something to read.

I go by number of gifts. I try really hard to not buy too many, but I still end up feeling like it's not enough. I am pretty much done the shopping and I promised myself I wouldn't get anything else. They all got 2 outfits, a movie, a book and a toy/game. Plus the younger two get a Santa gift.... and stockings. I also got 3 family games, each child opens one.

We have two kids, we buy each child one big gift from Santa. 2 gifts from us. One gift from each other and then the same amount of gifts and $ for their stockings. Including stockings we spend $200 on each child.

Are there really people out there that are spending $1000 or more per child????? That seems crazy.

We have spent probably $75 on each child. We are really trying to start young on having them ralize it isn't about all the gifts, but spending family time together. We get them one present from us, one smallish present from Santa and their stockings which are filled with a book, socks, socks, underwear, chocolates and a toy.

I was very pleased with myself because I started shoping in October and just bought something every week, so we weren't overwhelmed with large shopping bills. I even stuck to my budget too, which is even more amazing.

I can only assume there is something wrong with the poll, is it advertised on other Rogers sites? Perhaps the over $1000 answers are a joke. There is no way 39% of parents *I* know spend that much on their kids at Christmas!

I don't know anyone who spends that much per child either. But I do know I just added another gift for each kid in the house.. I really shouldn't be allowed in the stores anymore.

Geez DS's big present was $400 and I still won't get anywhere CLOSE to $1000. Luckily, my parents split on the gift with me...a set of Ludwig JR Drums!!!!!

Usually we do one big and 3-4 smaller gifts for each kid...plus stocking stuffers.

Taking a look at the results of how many parents spend over $1000 on each kid made me instantly feel like my kids were being deprived and almost making me go shopping to spend more. Let me guess, either the Walmart clan got everyone of their employees to click the $1000 button or every child in China clicked on it.

So far to date, I have spent roughly 1300 to date for everyone. This amount is including food stuff, Christmas treats. All that is left is perishables and I am done with stores until the end of January. This amount also includes necessities like soap and hair conditioner that will last my family until next Christmas.

For my children, especially DS, it is the food and ambiance that makes Christmas for him. Sure they like the feeling of anticipation of what ~Santa~ is bringing them too. I had a really hard time coming up with the wants of the kids. I mean come on, nuts and chocolate is on DS' list. Candy is on DD' .
Santa has it easy this year.

Ok, I thought it was just me thinking 1000 a kid was nuts! I would like to, but really they dont NEED 1000 worth of stuff! Especially all at once! I tried to stick to about 200 a kid (I have 3 kids) and a total of 5 gifts. 3 from us 2 from Santa. It worked out pretty close, I spent more on my 12 yr old. The stuff for him is just so damn expensive! And each kid got a total of 7 things. 4 from us 3 from santa. Plus stocking stuffer. Of course Chocolates (!!!), underwear, socks, a small toy. BUT I did buy a Leapster 2 from Ebay at a pretty good price (71.00 CDN, came with Leapster 2 and Cars game) and if I throw that in the mix it messes the balance and cost!! So I will save it for...... a rainy day? lol Yeah, I gotta stop going to the store, and online shopping. Sales are just so tantalizing.... I felt like I was depriving my kids when I read 1000 a kid too...But I do think I am spoiling them!

We buy one big gift from santa for the kids, all 3 of them this year it was a wii, we bought it months ago for $220, toys are us had a buy 2 get one free video games so they each got game too.
Then we spend $100 each, if that gets one gift or 8 thats what it is.
I barter for our turkey because its a free range organic turkey...

I won't go into a store between mid dec and early jan this year

We do $ amount and number of gifts if that makes sense. We bought the wii as a family gift and that alone would have been almost the amount that I would have spent on the kids so I forgot about that and spent about $200 on each of them (maybe a bit more on DS) DS has at least 15 gifts (between Santa and us) but I got excellent sales and really stayed in budget this year on the kids.

Holy Macaroni!! Approximately 20% have a per child budget of over $1000???? More power to you, I say....but even my wealthy inlaws barely break the $100 mark some years!! And I don't mean that badly....I'm all for restraint and moderation....probably lean too much to that end of the spectrum in fact. \:\(

Over $1000? I'm still reeling. Wow. Thank you for keeping the economy going!! \:D
