Have you ever, or would you ever, put your child in a harness?

We tried it but it wasn't really for us.

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.

no harness here - my kids ask why someone is treating their child like a dog when they see one. I laughed the first time b/c it is what I thought but I did ponit out some kids don't listen or it makes the parents feel 'safe' having them on one.

When we were pg with #1 we discussed it & both agreed that we wanted/expected our child to listen. If they don't they were put in the stroller. All five of our kids listened or we either went home or put in strollers. Even during busy times/places.

But this was just our thoughts. I do know one of the little girls I watch her mom had one b/c she just didn't listen with them - yet with me she NEVER took her hand off the stroller or pulled away etc. Not sure why as the parents are fairly strict also ;\)

I used one with DS1, and would use one again with DS2 if it would be beneficial.

DS1 has always been a curious little boy. There were many times that having a stroller along would be more of an encumbrance than help, so I would strap the harness on him. With mine, you can detach the 'leash' so that just the harness is on, which I found convenient for when we got to places he could roam more freely.

There were also times DS1 would have had a worse fit if I attempted to put him in a stroller when he wanted to walk. He would fight so hard that there would be no way I could put him in his stroller without hurting him. I picked the preferable option of using a harness.

I have them but I have never used them, I think if we were going with the twins to a very busy amuzment park or something I would use them at this age, they seem to like to go in opposite directions but since we aren't going to be doing that anytime soon I probably won't use them at all. I haven't used them for the older kids either.

I have one and have only needed to use it once, DS is very curious and finds it hilarious to run away from us. If we're only walking a short distance I hold his hand, but for longer periods I would use the harness because it's hard to expect a little short person to hold their arm up in the air for long periods of time, it would eventually go numb. I still rely on his stroller for 99% of our outings.

I have one and I use it on DS when I need to. He likes to walk but will sometimes run and since I can't push 2 strollers at the same time it works for us.

I have never felt the need to use a harness and really I don't see the point. From the time my kids could walk, I taught them to walk close to me and to hold my hand in crowded or dangerous places (Ie parking lots).

Don't get me wrong...I understand the safety concern but really I have never been in a situation where a harness would have been 'safer'.

Yes! I am a daycare provider and sometimes don't have the option of putting a "runner" in the stroller, as the stroller is in use. Some children are just runners. And even though I teach them at an early age to hold on to a strap at the side of the stroller, some of them just take longer to learn. For that transition period I have used a harness before, as we have to cross a busy street on our walk to school.

I also have a friend that used it when her twins were small. Only 2 hands and 3 little ones (her kids are only 18 months apart in age) she just felt so much safer at the mall with having at least one of them in a harness.

It is not treating the child like a "dog", (no one is putting a leash around the neck), it is keeping the child safe, and they are definitely useful for some kids.

I'm a babywearer, so my kids generally are worn most of the time. There are times though that they want to explore and walk on their own and the rule is, we hold hands.

We have a harness, a cute Doggy backpack style one, this is used for the same instances like momof4boys mentioned, amusement parks, festivals, concerts where there may be crowds, we even used it in Manhattan last summer. The rule is we still have to hold hands, but if something happened and our hands broke loose, we'd have the harness as a safeguard. I don't let them roam free like a dog on a leash...LOL! \:D

ROFL

the dog comment was made by one of my kids - b/c they were curious about them. We did explain how they were used for safety as some kids run, take off etc & some parents just want that extra 'safety' net.

We usually use the stroller in instances where we are 'unsure' but we also don't have a life so rarely go anywhere where we might feel the need to do more than stick them on our shoulder or in a stroller.

Hope I didn't offend anyone about the comment. Not meant to be that way - asked if we did & I said why.

Now I do have a picture of 6 kids in our big dog kennel - granted it was cleaned first & the kids used it more for an inside fort than the big 100 pound dog did ;\)

I have one for DD (one of the cute backpack style animal ones) that I have used a few times at the mall. She is at an age where she wants to walk instead of ride in the stroller and this way she can have the freedom to go and I have the security to know she cant go far. Before I had DD I swore I would never put my kids on a "leash", but I just feel so much better letting her walk in a busy place with the harness.

No offense taken! ;\)

I guess what I was trying to say is that we don't use the harness the typical way, we still hold hands, but if that hand wriggles free (believe me a have a Houdini here) then we have the harness strap around my wrist and they can only get as far as the strap goes.

Chel, I just got a mental vision of Ciaran zig zagging down the sidewalks of NYC in his doggy back pack harness, sniffing at every pretty girls Manolo B's! LOL \:D

Here's a pic from last summer we're in Central Park in New York and you can see Ciaran on the right is wearing his harness.
