Flood warnings issued along lower St. John River in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON - The annual spring flooding along the St. John River in New Brunswick has begun and residents living in low-lying areas were advised Tuesday to take precautions.

"Those residents should be taking steps to protect their property if they haven't already done so, securing objects that may be flooded and looking at their yards to see if there are any materials that might float away," said Andy Morton, deputy director of the province's Emergency Measures Organization.

Pedestrian walkways and a soccer field along the Fredericton's waterfront were submerged Tuesday as the river reached flood stage in the capital city.

"At the moment, there are no reports of any homes or infrastructure being directly impacted by the flooding," Morton said.

However, he expected that some roads would be covered by water in the next few days as a result of the continued snow melt and rain in the forecast.

"Fortunately after that we're looking at a cooling trend, so we may get a bit of a break in that regard, but we'll wait and see what the weather brings us," he said. Some business owners along Queen Street in Fredericton's downtown weren't taking any chances.

Trudy Gallagher who owns Bejewel, a custom jewellery store, said her staff have an emergency plan, and a sump pump has been installed in the basement.

"A lot of us have businesses along Queen Street with older basements," she said. "I'm concerned about water seepage because I have a lot of things stored in the basement."

Fire Chief Philip Toole said the city is prepared in the event of any serious flooding and Red Cross reception centres will be set up on both sides of the river for any residents affected.

The river is expected to reach flood stage at communities downstream of Fredericton by Thursday.

Morton said the river is free of ice, removing the concern of ice jams, but water levels will continue to rise as snow continues to melt in areas of the province's north.
