There are some programs in the US that offer small stipends to low-income, at-risk kids for after-school studying. We don't really do this in Canada on a formal basis but I'm sure some parents have tried with money or other incentives (I am guilty!). Most experts say that for "regular" kids, they're not a good idea. What do you think? Are they ever a good idea to get kids to study or work for good grades?

Like everything else I think it depends on the kid. I used to be against the practice but it occurred to me that if I turn in exceptional performance on the job I will get a bonus. School is my kid's job so maybe they deserved one too. I started offering financial incentives for grades when my boys were in grade 7 and 8. I thought long and hard about it because my eldest is gifted in some areas and I wasn't sure the youngest would be able to achieve at the same level. To be perfectly honest the incentive did nothing to motivate the eldest. He just wasn't interested in a reward or not willing to work now in order to reap the benefit in the future. To my surprise the youngest has never missed a semester of meeting the target (and he is now in grade 12). I think whether it will work depends on what motivates the individual and whether they are capable of future planning.

Eldest is now in first year university and seems to have found the motivation within himself to study hard.

LOL. Right now my 5 y.o. has basically gone on a school "strike". You have no idea how close I am to paying him to go to school! In fact, thanks for the idea!! \:D
