I recently heard an ad from Natrel that claim their milk is hormone-free, antibiotic-free, and contains no preservatives. The ad claims that the milk is as good as organic. I even found an FAQ on their site that further explains this (http://www.natrel.ca/english/faq/faq_01b.html). I'm confused - should I continue to buy organic or am I getting the same benefits if I buy Natrel? Can you help shed some light on this?
Thank you!

Hi HeidiBoyd.

Thank you for your posting. I'm also looking for information on the same topic thanks to that Natrel ad. (I must congratulate Natrel on the effectiveness of their radio spot!)I have a couple of questions to follow up on your posting.

- What is your background? Are you a nutritionist?

- Do you know of any studies looking into the effects (if any) of feeding milking cows organic v. conventional feed? Information on the amount (if any) of pesticides that are passed on in milk would be of use.

I, too, am sick of paying $10 for milk. \:\)

Thanks!

Sorry to multi-post, but I have a third question to ask on this...

- Isn't recombinant bovine growth hormone injected into cattle to make them produce more milk? My understanding is that this is another difference between normal and organic milk... Again, any info you have on concerns regarding the use of rBGH would be helpful.

Thanks again!

Hello and thank you for your question on the benefits of organic and other specialty milks versus conventional milk.

Just to clear things up, hormones and antibiotics are not found in any type of milk available for sale in Canada. Growth hormones are illegal for farmers to use and the system for milk inspection is very strict and thorough. If a cow is ill and requires antibiotics then they are separated from the herd and their milk is discarded. All milk is tested so rest assured that this is not an issue regardless of the type of milk you buy.

From a nutritional stand point all fluid milks are created equal – whether it is organic milk or not they all contain the same healthy nutritional profile. The only real difference is the price. You are paying more for organic milk because it can be more expensive to produce and is usually done on a smaller scale.

Organic milk comes from dairy cows that are fed organically grown crops. Basic requirements for organic dairying include all feed being grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Cows producing milk for this market may not be given antibiotics at all.

Really it is a personal decision as to what type of milk you choose for your family but nutritionally they are the same.

To answer the further questions on this topic, I do not know of particular studies that look at the composition of milk from cow's fed organic versus conventional feeds. People who choose organic can be assured that the milk they are consuming is from cow's fed organic feed without the use of pesticides if that is their concern.

The use of hormones, particularly recombinant bovine growth hormone, is illegal in Canada so whether you have organic milk or regular milk this is no different, growth hormone is not used on any type of Dairy cow in this country.

Oh my background... I am a Registered Dietitian \:\)

Thanks!
- Heidi
