Let's say your vehicle has a captain's chair that has to bend forward to slide forward & gain access to the rear row -- can you have a booster seat installed in this chair and still move the seat forward to get in the back? Does it have to be a backless booster seat?

DS is 4.5, 42" tall, and 40lbs now - he is still in his FF 5pt harness in our everyday car, but we want to have 2 seats in the 2nd vehicle which he rides in once a month or so, and just plan on getting a booster now.

DH doesn't want a booster with the back on it, but I don't think that's a good idea, but I don't really know what to tell him when he asks why.

Any advice on what booster seat we should get? For now it's being installed in a mustang, but it will get put in a different vehicle in a year or so. I want something narrow, as we will need to have 3 seats across in one of our vehicles once the mustang is gone. (booster, graco snugride, and britax marathon or roundabout)

I just have no idea, I'm so out of the loop when it comes to booster seats since i'm the only one around here that cares about my kids safety. Most people I know have had their kids in backless boosters using the lap belt since they were 2 yrs old (no, I'm not kidding!!!)

Uh....with your mustang what kind of seat are in the back? Most Mustangs I see what the DEEP bucket seats. Double check your vehicle manual.

As for WHY to get a High Back booster seat, well its for the side impact protection, AND he is only 4 years old, and needs the extra support, and the belt guides to get a proper lap/shoulder belt fit. The no back boosters are usually good for kids 6+, who don't fall asleep int he vehicle and are able to "use" the side airbags....so to speak.

I wouldn't suggest getting a booster seat for your full time vehicle, since he's still kinda young, and a 5pt harness is much safer.

Since most booster seats only 'install' once the child is sitting it and the the lap/shoulder belt is over the child (properly) than there is no issues with moving the vehicle seat, other than having to move the booster seat all the time.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding the first part of the original post:

Are you planning to have him in the front seat in the booster? If so I would advise against this even if you have advanced airbags, the safest pace for kids under 13 is in the back seat.

I think she meant the second-row captain chairs are the tumble kind of seat and you have to tumble it to be able to get into the 3rd row. Like a Sienna 8-seat for example \:\)

And it reads like she want to use the captain chair but unsure if a booster would be ok for the tumble-kind captain chair.

But then I can be high on cheap med. right now to get over this flu and imagine things \:\)

I must be clueless on something here - what does it matter what kind of seat the mustang has in the back? It's almost like a bench, but I think it maybe curves up a bit at the edges. We are ditching within a year for an escalade or similar. We have had a roundabout and a marathon installed in the rear seat. What am I looking for in the manual?

And yes, I'm referring to the captains chairs in a 2nd row of a 3 row vehicle. The escalade for example.

So booster seats just rest on the seat?? They aren't anchored in using LATCH or anything? I don't think the mustang has latch because it's a year before it was required in vehicles.

So does anyone have any suggestions for a good booster with a back on it?

He would only ride in it very occasionally - basically only if there was an emergency and DH had to head out with both the kids and I had the other vehicle somewhere, or if one vehicle needs to be taken in for repair, etc.. But in a couple years when he outgrows his marathon it will be his regular seat. (our marathons are the older ones without the new weight limit)

What about the Graco Nautilus? You can have your ds harnessed still and after it does convert to a highback and no back booster. Pretty much it would be the last seat you would need to buy.

Some boosters allow you to use UAS and install them, others just rest on the seat and then the child and seat belt hold them in. If they aren't being used you should do the seat belt up to prevent them from becoming a projectile and hurting someone in the car. If they are installed with UAS then you won't be able to tumble the seat without undoing that first.

Some boosters I'd check out are the Monterey (can LATCH), ParkwaySG (no LATCH) or a High back TurboBooster (but it won't last as long if you want it for your eventual full time booster). If you want a seat that will harness and then convert to a booster there is the Frontier and Nautilus.

I'm not sure what the mustang seat discussion was about so hopefully someone else can clear that up.

I was asking because some of the newer mustangs you would never be able to put 3 car seat in them, because the center spot isn't actually made for a person.

See what I mean....LOL - This is what I'm used to seeing when I look at mustangs (mind you these are in the mustang's DH wants...lol)

Oh, ok. Our mustang doesn't have that hump in the middle back, but it only has 2 seatbelts in the back. I didn't mean for 3 seats in the back of it. Just 2 seats for now until we ditch it. We currently only have one seat in it.
